How To Care For and Clean Cast Iron Cookware

Old-time down home flavor is achieved by cooking in well seasoned cast iron cookware. To keep your cast iron in the best of shape follow these simple care and cleaning instructions.

1. After cooking in your cookware, it can be cleaning by putting it into warm water (Never Use Cold Water - See below) and bringing it to a boil. After pouring out boiling water, wipe dry with a paper towel.
2. Never use any kind of detergent to clean seasoned cookware, as it will remove the seasoning. DO NOT put in dishwasher!
3. If something sticks to the surface, dislodge it by using a spoon. Do not use abrasive items to scrub cookware, this can cut into seasoned surface.
4. While the cookware is still warm from washing, but dry, apply just enough grease or oil to wet all surfaces. Solid shortening wiped on with a paper towel works great!
5. Store your cookware in a cool dry location. If storing with lid, place a paper towel between the lid and base to allow for air circulation.
6. Avoid putting hot cast iron into cold water. This can cause cast iron to warp or crack.
7. If metallic taste or signs of rust are noticed, simply wash with hot, soapy water. Scour off the rust, and then re-season your cookware. See Seasoning Cast Iron Cookware.
8. If your cookware ever becomes incrusted with burnt on food that can't be removed with boiling water it is suggested to place the cookware in a container covered with water and brought to a continuous boil until the food loosens and then re-season your cookware. See Seasoning Cast Iron Cookware.
9. Re-season cookware after cooking beans or acidic foods (such as tomatoes). See Seasoning Cast Iron Cookware.
10. Do not use cast iron cookware for storage of food.
